Here's a way to reach the Lincoln Peak on the Long Trail without using a blue-blazed side trail:

The Sugarbush Resort has a large, free parking lot which is open all summer.  Park there and hike up the service road (about 3 miles) to join the Long Trail where the viewing platform is on Lincoln Peak.  From there you can hike south on the LT eight tenths of a mile to the summit of Mount Abraham or north to Mount Ellen and beyond.

The service road climbs from an elevation of about 1800' to the 3975' summit of Lincoln Peak.  If that's a bit daunting, you can shorten the trip by purchasing a lift ticket ($15 round trip, in the summer the lift runs every day starting at 10am), ride the Super Bravo Quad lift up to Allyn's Lodge at elevation 3100', and hike up the service road from there.
